You are invited to our season’s opening Photonite on Thursday, September 7th, 2006 at the San Francisco Exposure Gallery. September’s Photonite guest speaker will be Fran Ortiz. The gallery will be exhibiting his work and our season opening Photonite will be the opening reception. Fran will talk about his life, his work, his experiences as a photographer and as a teacher and anything else you wish to ask him about.
Remember that Photonite is free, drinks are sponsored by BAPPA but it is a potluck – so please bring something small to share to eat.
Fran Ortiz
Fran Ortiz began his photojournalism career in 1962 as a staff photographer for the San Francisco Examiner. During his 32+ year career at the Examiner, he covered local, national and international events. Nationally, his work has appeared in publication sincluding Time, Life, Sports Illustrated, Harper’s Bazaar, The New York Times and the Chicago Tribune. In 1972 he was commissioned by the Bank of America to photograph the Winter Olympics in Sapporo, Japan.
In discussing Ortiz’s photographs, Ansel Adams wrote: “I am especially taken by the variety and quality of Fran Ortiz’s work; to maintain such a consistently excellent output is, indeed, an achievement.”
In the late sixties Ortiz was asked to conduct a weekend seminar at the University of California in Berkeley- which led to part time teaching at Cal and then to a job at San Francisco State University where he taught for 18 years. His classes went beyond the technical aspects of the camera and the darkroom, teaching that a photographer has the power to inspire and shock, titillate, wound and heal.
Ortiz says, “I have always loved the camera’s unique ability to capture time in an instant and freeze it for a lifetime.”
Now retired in his native Bay Area, Ortiz is focusing his attention on photographing the land. The images that will be on display represent some old favorites and some new studies.
