Media Relations Summer Internship
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) Bay Area is seeking a public/media relations summer intern. Engage in promoting the organization’s largest fundraiser the Walk to Cure Diabetes by writing or selecting favorable publicity material and releasing it through various communications media. You will write and send press releases to media outlets and pitch stories to print and broadcast media and on the Internet.
The mission of JDRF is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research. In a typical year more than 85% of JDRF expenditures directly support research and research related education. This is not a paid internship. Instead we are flexible and you will gain great experience. Begin in June and end in August. Work 3-4 days per week. JDRF is located in downtown
Purpose of Walk to Cure Diabetes Media Relations
· To educate the public about diabetes, JDRF and the Walk to Cure Diabetes
· To provide additional benefits to Walk to Cure Diabetes corporate sponsors
· To gain exposure to JDRF and its mission as well as the Walk to Cure Diabetes by reaching the many people living with type 1 diabetes in the Bay Area who are not familiar with JDRF already.
· To attract additional individual walkers and walk teams: to in increase associated revenue and thus advance the mission of JDRF.
Objective of Internship
To gain experience working with JDRF staff and Media Relations volunteers teams to
· Increase broad exposure for JDRF and our mission to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications through the support of research.
· Increase awareness of the Walk to Cure Diabetes in the community and increase registration of new Walkers.
· Recruit local colleges and university students Walk teams
· Ensure media coverage of the Walk to Cure Diabetes
· Educate the general public about type 1 diabetes.
Duties of the Intern
- Develop and distribute press releases and media advisories
- Distribute television, radio and print PSAs to the appropriate media outlets
· Pitch story ideas to local media outlets
· Develop and implement plan to recruit local high schools, colleges and university students Walk teams
- Assemble and distribute press kits to all on the news media contact target list
- Work to arrange news media coverage on Walk Day
- Proper follow-up on all news media information after distribution
Requirements
· Excellent, creative writing and communication skills.
· Well-versed in Microsoft Office
· Strong desire in public/media relations, creative writing and/or marketing
· Great organizational skills-being able to work quickly and efficiently
· A creative go-getter with high-energy and great work ethic
· You must be in a current (or have recently completed) degree program in public relations, journalism, marketing, or communications.
