Summer Online Editorial / Journalism Internship at AlterNet

 
Location: San Francisco

The Opportunity:

AlterNet.org, one
of the largest progressive political and cultural web-magazines and
online communities, seeks an editorial intern who is a well-organized,
energetic team player with a commitment to and interest in progressive
issues. We are looking for a talented and creative
undergraduate/graduate student (or recent graduate) to help our
editorial team run and produce the best progressive content out there.
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual to learn,
grow, develop professionally and position themselves for a fulfilling
career. Interning with AlterNet is a great way to gain real world
experience that could lead to a career in journalism, issue advocacy,
public policy, public relations or many other avenues. We are looking
for either a part-time or full-time intern to work with us through the
summer months.

This is a paid/stipended internship opportunity. We are looking for someone who can work part-time to full-time, depending on availability. The internship would start as soon as possible and end in August/September.


What You’ll Do:

• Compose original content (blogs and feature
articles) for use on AlterNet’s web-site
• Expect to be assigned
articles as well as be responsible for pitching editors your own ideas

Contribute to our social media efforts

• Input content into our content management system
• Monitor online
activity and buzz surround blog posts/articles and assist in comment
moderation
• Conduct online research, including media tracking

Assist with assorted editorial tasks


What You’ll Have:

• Background in journalism, political
advocacy, and/or related fields or activities
• Knowledge of
contemporary political debates and issues, particularly those of
interest to progressives

• Basic knowledge of HTML
• Excellent written communication skills

Creativity and attention to detail
• Self-motivation and an ability
to work well with others
• Experience content management systems a
plus

• We would prefer people with prior editorial and/or political
internship or work experience
