AP NEWSWRITING INTERNSHIP - SAN FRANCISCO - SUMMER 2011

We're seeking potential applicants for Summer 2011 internships right now!

AM I ELIGIBLE?

The internship is open to full-time juniors, seniors and graduate students at American colleges and universities.

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE IN THE PROGRAM?

Up to 22 interns are selected nationally. One will work in northern California, based primarily in our San Francisco bureau.

WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PROGRAM?

You get to work in an AP bureau under the supervision of a designated trainer. You get paid. And you get to cover breaking news that may be featured in many media outlets.

WHEN DOES THE PROGRAM START?

Start dates may be anytime between mid-May and mid-June, depending on your schedule.

WHAT DO YOU NEED FROM ME?

We begin interviewing news candidates for the summer in early November, so we need to hear from potential applicants now. If interested, applicants should immediately send:

  • A resume and cover letter

  • Five to seven clips

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER SUBMITTING THESE DOCUMENTS?

We'll review them and then invite successful applicants to the nearest AP bureau, where they will need to provide a 300-word autobiographical essay on this topic:

“The Associated Press seeks to recruit and retain a workforce that embodies a wide range of talents, experiences, achievements and journalistic skills. Please describe the qualities and accomplishments you would bring to the company.”

Invited 2nd stage applicants also will need two letters of reference, at least one from a professor or faculty adviser on school letterhead. At the bureau, 2nd stage applicants will:

  • Interview with an AP chief of bureau

  • Complete an employment application

  • Take a timed newswriting test

Experience:

Typically, students with at least one prior internship are selected.
