Description:
Rethink Media works with the foremost think tanks,
foundations, advocacy organizations and grassroots groups working in the fields
of disarmament, nuclear nonproliferation, conflict prevention, international
law, human rights and peace. Rethink Media's mission is to provide these
organizations with access to state-of-the-art media technologies, expert
communications training and the latest in public opinion, media and messaging
research.
Rethink Media’s paid Internship and Fellowship programs
provide talented undergraduate and graduate students in media, communications
and journalism with hands-on experience in the fields of non-profit and advocacy
communications. Fellows and Interns get training and real-work experience in
applying the latest media tools and strategies to existing campaigns and
organizations as well as the opportunity to make professional contacts and be
mentored by experienced professionals.
Successful candidates will be exposed to a wide range of
media and communications skills and responsibilities including administrative
and research activities.
Depending on the
project, upcoming activities include but are not limited to:

Building and maintaining targeted media lists
using a database of 800,000 media contacts. Media lists will be developed to
address issues such as US policy toward Iran, nuclear weapon policy in the new
administration and US involvement in Iraq.
·
Monitoring traditional and online media coverage
and public opinion and conducting research via Lexis-Nexis and the Internet.
·
Assisting in building and managing rapid
response media campaigns.
·
Compiling, producing and distributing summaries
of media coverage and public opinion analysis for member organizations and foundations.
·
Managing media clipping and monitoring service
accounts.
·
Researching and updating online content in our
media resource and training library.
·
Researching and writing ‘best practices’
training guides and tips for using new media and publicity tools in advocacy
communications.
·
Assisting organizations in using state of the
art collaboration and social technology tools to build online media campaigns.
·
Auditing groups’ press rooms and providing
recommendations for improvement.
·
Assisting in the development and completion of a
unique survey of foreign policy journalists and bloggers.
·
Assisting organizations or campaigns, as
required, with hosting online press conferences, planning news events, drafting
op-eds and crafting talking points.
The ideal candidate will be an undergraduate or graduate
student in media and communications or journalism with a strong commitment to
or background in one or more of the policy issues represented by the groups
that Rethink Media works with.
Hours and Compensation
Rethink Media Interns and Fellows are expected to work 20
hours per week for a three-month period (although less time may be considered
in special circumstances). The current rate of compensation for Interns is
$10.50 per hour.
At present we are looking to hire three to four individuals based
in either our Berkeley, California or Washington, D.C. office. Successful
candidates may also have the opportunity to continue working beyond the
semester.
