SF Commons Public Access Television Internship

The Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) is currently
accepting applications to the Public Access Television Internship, where
selected individuals will gain skills and work experience in community
television operations at BAVC’s new public access television station, SF
Commons. Launched September 1, 2009, SF Commons includes two channels on
Comcast, two channels on Astound, and one channel on AT&T U-verse, running
diverse community television programs and offering producer training, services,
and equipment and facilities access. The SF Commons Intern will work side by
side with BAVC’s Director of Public Media Strategies and a small team of
station staff during a 12-week intensive program. The internship will be between
15 and 20 hours per week, primarily evening hours from 4:00 or 5:00pm to
8:00pm, Monday through Friday at an accessible Mission District location. The
internship is ideal for a film, television, or new media student with evening
availability, and the right person will gain a significant amount of experience
and will develop relationships with station staff, local producers, and
organizations.

The goal of the internship is to provide the intern with
the opportunity to work in a fully operational television station, gaining
skills by assisting with community outreach, producer relations, and technical,
programmatic, and creative support for live and pre-recorded television
programs, under the guidance and support of station staff. This internship not
only offers the potential to work on the leading edge of broadcast and new
media platforms, but also to work with those leading the movement, at an
exciting time for the organization, and while new programs and projects are
being developed and implemented. In a practical sense, this internship offers
the intern the opportunity not only to develop their media skills, but also to
learn workflows and techniques through hands-on experience creating and
supporting industry-standard deliverables. Intern duties will include
administrative duties such as front desk support, maintaining producer and
program records, and reception; technical duties such as setting up studios and
equipment for live program transmission, supporting facility access and field
equipment, and assisting producers with media encoding and file transfer for
broadcast playback; and community outreach and program support, such as
communicating with producers, supporting programming meetings and orientations,
or assisting an instructor and students during workshops. Other duties will be
assigned as needed, adapted to the intern’s skill-set and interests, and
training will be provided as needed.

As an additional benefit, the intern will have access to
production and postproduction equipment and facilities outside of internship
hours, so the internship is ideal for a student who could benefit from this
access to support production of personal projects and learning.
