Colorlines.com editorial internship

Colorlines.com Journalism Internship

Colorlines.com,
a daily news and investigative reporting web magazine, is published by
the Applied Research Center (ARC), a think tank for media and advocacy
on racial justice. Colorlines and ARC are built around aggressive news
reporting, rigorous research and the use of interactive technology to
build networks. Three times a year, we welcome a journalism intern to
contribute to both our news gathering and our long-term research
projects. The journalism intern works primarily on Colorlines.com, but
may also contribute to ARC's research and network building initiatives.

Colorlines.com
offers a unique opportunity for hands-on experience with both old
fashioned news gathering and a now-essential new media publishing
environment. As a lean, ambitious news team, Colorlines cannot afford to
have interns dedicated to support work alone; our interns must be
reporters, bloggers and multimedia producers! The
journalism intern will:

  • Report to News Editor and work out of our Oakland office.

  • Monitor general assignment
stories as assigned by editors, keeping the editorial team informed
about developments in those stories and pitching new coverage as
    required.

  • Produce three to five blog
posts daily, as assigned by editors. Blogging ranges from aggregating
and digesting content from around the Web to short original reporting,
including reporting for multimedia news features (infographics,
    interactive elements, videos).

  • Produce at least one larger feature story, with a multimedia focus.

  • Fact-check investigations and news features, as assigned by editors.

  • Support reporters, contributors and ARC researchers on longterm investigative and feature projects.

  • Engage Colorlines' social
networking and commenting communities, both under the intern's own
handle and, as needed, under Colorlines' name.

  • Help monitor Colorlines.com's Public Insight Network.

  • Additional duties that may not be related to editorial work, as assigned by editors.

This
is an unpaid internship; we will work with students to facilitate
school credit. The spring semester internship requires a minimum of
12-15 hours per week during the semester, with days beginning at 9 a.m
pacific time unless otherwise assigned by supervisor. The position will
start in mid-February and end in June.

The
candidate should have a familiarity with and interest in racial
justice, both in pubic policy and in the cultural sphere. In addition,
the candidate should have the following basic qualifications: strong
research and writing skills, at least bachelor's level experience
reporting for publication, experience with new media and multimedia
platforms (video, social networking, blogging, etc.), ability to work
with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds, flexibility and
creativity. Multi-lingual skills are a plus.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis and should be sent no later than Tuesday, February 1.

Interested? Send a resume, cover letter and two writing samples (at least 1 non-academic) to Jamilah King at jking@arc.org.
