WHAT IS IJWI?
The Intensive Journalistic Writing Institute (IJWI) will focus on techniques teachers can use in their classrooms. The instructors will cover gathering information (research techniques), news writing, feature writing, opinion writing, self-editing/revision (grammar, spelling, vocabulary, word usage, style), and writing and editing for specific audiences. Teachers will receive sample lessons and resources that have worked with students.
WHAT IS THE CONTENT OF THE COURSE?
Intensive journalistic writing is not a production class. Participants will
learn how to prepare students to meet the changes in the AP English Language
and Composition Examination. Most IJWI classes are junior- and senior-level
English courses. Students can qualify for English, fine art, or technical writing credits
through IJW courses.
WHAT WILL I LEARN DURING THE COURSE?
• To use journalism skills as a foundation for effective writing
• To correlate and integrate journalistic and rhetorical modes in classrooms
• To identify specific techniques for individualized instruction
• To develop a body of knowledge about how to teach writing
• To incorporate First Amendment education in the course
• To develop strategies to encourage students to read more and think critically
• To develop a framework for a journalism curriculum guide
