Youth Journalism Advising

 

WHAT IS YJA?
It is a workshop where professional journalism instructors will coach high school educators how to teach journalism. Participants leave with a portfolio of practical lessons and reference materials for their classes.

WHAT WILL ADVISERS LEARN?
Journalism advisers will learn new methods and techniques of teaching journalism in high schools. They will compile a portfolio of practical lessons that they can apply in class.

WHO WILL TEACH SESSIONS?
The lead teachers are Carol Lange and Ron Bennett. Both have advised various publications for more than 20 years. Lange was a Dow Jones Newspaper Fund high school journalism teacher of the year, and Bennett, a DJNF distinguished adviser.


IS COURSE CREDIT AVAILABLE?
Three-units of Secondary Education credit is available for a $225 fee. Participants are not required to receive the units. Make check or money order payable to CEL-SFSU (no credit cards please) by, or on the first day of class.



IS HOUSING AVAILABLE?

On campus housing is provided beginning July 16. The total price for one person is $263.75 per room. Two participants can also share a room, and pay $153.75 each. The bathroom and shower is communal. Breakfast is included. The registration deadline for dorm housing is June 1.


WHAT WILL YJA COST?
The fee for the five-day YJA workshop is $400 and covers all instructional costs and materials. The fee does not include housing or Secondary Education credit. There is no refund for any workshop fees after June 1. Make checks for the workshop and housing payable to CIIJ.
