San Jose Mercury News Summer Photography Internship Program

As a Mercury News photo intern, you will be encouraged to become involved in the entire creative process. You will learn to work closely with reporters, editors, and picture editors on your way to becoming a complete journalist.

A volunteer member from our photo staff will serve as a mentor to our intern to offer daily feedback and direction. We currently offer one internship beginning in June. The internship is paid and lasts eleven weeks.
We provide all of the equipment you need to reach your highest potential.

Applicants must be enrolled in a two or four-year college program. Grad students are also eligible. Students in their junior year are encouraged to apply. We are also seeking candidates who are interested in picture editing. Two of our past five interns have been picture editors. Our pool of candidates will determine the choice of a photographer or picture editor.

To get started:
1.) Send us a letter telling us about yourself, your work and why you are
interested in a Mercury News photo internship.
2.) Include a resume with at least three references.
3.) A portfolio of 20-40 images with full caption information. We accept copy slides or digital multi-media presentations. CD's are preferred.

Deadline for applications is November 1, 2005. Finalists will be notified by
mid-November. I can be reached at 408-920-5434, voice-mail at 408-271-3717 or e-mail at greyes@mercurynews.com.
