The Bay Area Multicultural Media Academy (BAMMA) is a two-week residential program built around developing journalism skills and careers for Bay Area high school students.

The Center for Integration and Improvement of Journalism at San Francisco State University has sponsored BAMMA since 1990. Our graduates work in print, radio, television and online journalism.

BAMMA is dedicated to providing opportunities to youth from underserved communities—Asian American, African American, Latino, Native American and low-income youth—to develop skills as a journalist that will open doors for them in media careers and help the profession do a better job covering news for everyone.

STUDENTS OF BAMMA

Eighteen teenagers participate in BAMMA and produce Golden Gate [X]Press 2.0, a 24-page tabloid newspaper, under the direction of professional journalists and SFSU journalism majors. They photograph, report and write on real stories that are printed and distributed at the university and throughout the Bay Area.

STAFF OF BAMMA

San Francisco Chronicle business reporter Tom Abate leads a diverse staff of professional journalists, journalism instructors and SFSU students. Many of our students have themselves faced the deadline pressure of working on SFSU’s award-winning Golden Gate [X]Press and in professional newsrooms.

GUESTS AND HOSTS OF BAMMA

In addition to classroom instruction, BAMMA participants speak with journalists and newsmakers, tour newsrooms, and attend press conferences. A few of our guests are BAMMA alumni; some are professional journalists and all are committed to educating our future journalists.
